A very Scottish christmas

23rd December 2004

Time to put the blog to sleep for the festive period. In a break from the usual sitting at home with the parents, watching endless soaps on TV and sweltering from a wave of central heating, Emma and I are spending Christmas in Scotland. We’ve bagged a beautiful cottage for a few days in Glensheil, just a few miles from the Isle of Skye.

We’re flying into Edinburgh on the evening of the 23rd, staying there for the night. The following morning we’ll pick up the hire car, fill it with traditional Scottish foods from the city’s finest purveyors, then take the four hour drive to the North.

snowy roads

We’ll have stunning views of Loch Duich and the mountains of Kintail. Just 6 miles away at the opposite end of the loch sits Eilean Donan Castle, as featured in old immortals movie Highlander. I’ll be attempting to reinact scenes from the film to annoy Emma. I’m also hoping we can visit the Isle Of Skye via the Skye Bridge.

I’m hoping it’ll be all snowy and Christmassy up there, but I’m a bit worried about the four-hour drive through bleak highlands. I may bring you reports of our holiday stuck in snowdrifts. Anyway, I’ve got a new digital camera, so expect 4 million images on my return.

Have a very Merry Christmas, readers. Remember, I think the world of you all.

Have a good holiday! Eat and drink as much as you can, there’s a whole year to get rid of it later!  :)

Look at “Macrae graveyard” in your gallery - behind the ruins of that church, over the loch (on the right hand side of the road / bridge-y thing is where my grandmother used to live. In the valley there what a grand spot of the world you had your christmas in. Did you rent that cottage - can you mail me links!? I hope you had a fantastic time in the country.

Sorry to double comment, correction to be made-  left hand side of the road passing. Also - now your’e not going to believe me - but my grandmother Yunnie MacKinnon was an extra in the ‘Highlander’ and rand across that very bridge (Eilean Donan) although we’ve never sat down at a HDTV to see her 5 frames to fame. Go into Dornie pub and say you know the family, they’ll be sure to tell you a tale or two of the crazy days Hollywood came to stay.

I’m definitely gonna go back there, Callum - hopefully next Christmas. I’ll be sure to pop in to Dornie and ask around.

Visit http://www.glomach.co.uk and look at the cottage pages. Contact Celia and she’ll be sure to help all she can. Costs something like £60 per night, and sleeps four. Tell her Simon and Emma recommended it to you.

Thanks for the details about the area - adds a bit of flavour. Really loved it up there.
