Guilty Pleasures

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been enjoying the beautifully designed mixes over at Designers.MX, curated by Blake Allen and Josh Sullivan. So, it was a pleasure to contribute a mix, although I opted for something a little more, erm… risky.

Guilty Pleasures cover

Now, I have excellent taste in music; the best taste in the world. We each think our taste is better than anyone else’s, right? I’m most at home with my alternative, indie, post-punk, singer-songwritery stuff. I tend towards beautiful, awkward, angular noise and always will. My iTunes library is a vast collection of the greatest music ever made, naturally.

Still, I looked at the array of mixes already up on Designers.MX and saw an opportunity to be brave, and drag some guilt out into the open for all to see. So far, I’ve not yet been castigated by my friends or peers. Phew.

The description

Pop, soft rock, incomprehensible eurodisco. Even U2—to whom I am vehemently opposed. Yep, these are some of my Guilty Pleasures; songs that I never scrobble to avoid ridicule. Well, I’m coming clean with this mix, and I urge you to put aside your prejudices, turn up the speakers, and enjoy some prime slices of epic with me. Life’s too short to be a snob, and it’s OK to like a Katy Perry song. Isn’t it? Oh.

The track list

OK, brace yourselves…

  1. Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead Or Alive
  2. Sugababes - Freak Like Me
  3. Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
  4. Blondie - Union City Blues
  5. The Waterboys - Fishermans Blues
  6. Desireless - Voyage Voyage
  7. Katy Perry - Teenage Dream
  8. U2 - Desire
  9. Madonna - Borderline
  10. Electric Light Orchestra - Mr. Blue Sky

Katy Perry. Well, that’s all to do with a drunken New York cab ride, plus it’s a great pop song; that chorus! Sugababes? SUGABABES?! C’mon, that Gary Numan stuff mixed with some pretty fucking great melodies is fantastic. Fleetwood Mac? That’s more to do with the lyrics. Blondie? That has a lot to do with her orange boiler suit and aviators. U2? well, they made approximately four decent songs. ELO? My Dad played that all the time, and I love it. Madonna? Yeah, always liked a bit of her early pop. Like A Prayer is also amazing, in my decreasingly respected opinion.

The nearly rans

Anyway, other songs I nearly included were Kylie’s pop classic Better The Devil You Know (addictively catchy), Fat Larry’s Band with the slushy Zoom, Glen Campbell’s countryfied ode Wichita Lineman, Frankie’s epic Two Tribes, Queen’s Great King Rat, a 70s track by Heart, several songs off’ve the Pet Shop Boys 7-track house-y synth-pop extravaganza Introspective ... the list goes on. And I’m not ashamed.

Guilty Pleasures

So, don’t judge me on these songs alone, and let’s all admit that we each have our own guilty pleasures. If you deny it, you are a liar. Go on, share yours below. I tell, you, it feels good.
