This editorial was written for the New Adventures magazine, January 2019.
The first New Adventures took place in 2011, sparking a trilogy of events that helped push digital design forward with bold ideas and honest opinion. The whole thing was a blast. Some seasoned conference-goers considered it their favourite, and for many it was their first event.

Last month I was thrilled to speak at the Creative Mornings Benefit in Brooklyn, alongside Jason Santa Maria. By way of record, I’ve pulled together videos of both talks plus my slides and a few thoughts in this quick post.

After my trip to Minnesota I travelled straight to Brooklyn. I never need a reason to visit my favourite borough, but I was especially excited to attend my third Brooklyn Beta as this time it would be as an insider, supporting my Fictive Kin.

Earlier this month I spent four days in remote Nisswa, Minnesota where I delivered a keynote to around 350 designers, alongside Pentagram’s Paula Scher, book designer and Batman author Chip Kidd, and heroes of illustration The Heads of State. It was a breath of fresh air, and it made me think again about what I present and to whom I present it.

Right now, I’m resting hard after a very successful second New Adventures in Web Design conference, and I’ll write an overview of this overwhelming experience soon. For now, I just wanted to say a little about this year’s newspaper.

One wet afternoon in April, I was sat in The Gladstone with my good friend and collaborator Greg Wood — making light work of pale ales — when the conversation came around to New Adventures.

Back in November, I was lucky enough to speak at the wonderful Build in Belfast. I reflected on over two years of specific investigation into our craft, and I think it’s one of my stronger talks. I certainly stand by the messages.

After six months of planning and an ever-increasing buzz, the day finally came when 650 web designers descended on Nottingham for the very first New Adventures event. I’m still exhausted and frantically evaluating it all, but now seems like a good time to sum up the highs and the lows of this bold new adventure.
