31st December, 2018
It was a year where music helped contextualise a world weighing heavy, my favourite albums serving as coping mechanisms. Stacking art in ordered lists is questionable, but also a way to exert a little control, to own something of the year. And so, here are my top albums, tracks, and gigs of 2018.
31st December, 2017
A fantastic year for music: many of my favourites returned with new albums and heaps of exceptional new artists appeared. We also made it to lots of shows. Here are my top albums, tracks, compilations and gigs of 2017.
31st December, 2016
We lost David Bowie, and the world collapsed into the disturbing but not entirely unexpected populism of Brexit and Trump. Black voices mattered: Solange; Michael Kiwanuka; A Tribe Called Quest; Chance; the absolute brilliance of Frank Ocean. Here are my top albums, tracks, compilations and gigs of 2016.
31st December, 2015
I'm not sure 2015 was an especially memorable year for music, but I've made a commitment to these lists now. So, here we go with my top albums, tracks, compilations, and gigs.
31st December, 2014
It was yet another cracking year for new music, and I consumed as much as possible, making my annual roundup as difficult as ever. To follow my 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 lists, here’s 2014. Let’s get on with it.
30th December, 2013
Personally, I considered 2013 to be an incredible year for good music. I was at times overwhelmed and consumed exactly eighteen tonnes of new sounds and bought too much vinyl probably. Anyhow, let's get moving. In the spirit of my 2010, 2011, and 2012 lists, here's one for 2013.
30th December, 2012
I considered 2012 to be an epic year for music, and I absorbed so much over the last twelve months due in part to Rdio finally launching in the UK, and our new project Rushmore. So, having set my stall out with my 2010 and 2011 roundups, I felt compelled to trawl the year and document the orchestrated noises I couldn't leave alone in 2012.
31st December, 2011
Twelve months ago I started something I now have to maintain: an annual roundup of the music I’ve fallen in love with each year. So, following the aforementioned 2010 roundup, here’s my year in music, 2011.
2nd January, 2011
I used to write often about music for this journal. Those days of turning sounds into words have slipped by, but I still consume new music as eagerly as I did at any other time in my life. Like many, I cannot help but compile lists, and I shall not apologise for it either. Here, for your pleasure, are my top albums, songs, and performances of 2010.
1st June, 2008
Partly because some friends and I were discussing classic cover versions in the pub, but mostly because (as regular readers will be aware) I love making music lists, I decided to finish a list I started ages ago.
21st October, 2006
Last week, in an attempt offset the mammoth workload and do something without pixels, I assembled all of my gig tickets from the last fifteen years.
31st December, 2005
It’s my fantastic end of year review, the bumper hard-back annual to accompany the regular monthlies that you all pretend to love so much.
11th March, 2005
Here I go again. My Top 100 Albums brought me an equal number of enemies and friends back in September, and owing to a natural gap in the workload, I bring you my Top 100 Songs. I did impose a couple of rules this time however…
2nd September, 2004
Here’s the first of my Top 100s. Every time I’ve had a few minutes to kill, I’ve been adding to and arranging my list of top 100 albums to date. I realise this is incredibly anal, but I do like a bit of order in my life—and I’m a sucker for lists.
